Backed by a ground-breaking 2015 study published in the BMJ Open

Diabetes Research & Care, the programme offers a culturally relevant solution to

address type 2 diabetes and obesity, which disproportionately affect South Asian communities.

The study demonstrated that Bollywood dance sessions significantly improved blood sugar levels (HbA1c) and promoted weight loss among South Asian women with type 2 diabetes. The intervention’s cultural relevance was key in increasing participant engagement and attendance, making it an effective tool for long-term health improvements.

Bollyfit Active: Turning Evidence into Action

Bollyfit Active is bridging the gap between traditional fitness and cultural familiarity,

empowering South Asian women to take control of their health through vibrant,

energetic Bollywood-inspired dance classes.

Shamime, Founder and Director of Bollyfit Active CiC, says: “The research clearly shows that culturally relevant excerise programmes can have a transformative impact on health. At Bollyfit Active, we bring this evidence to life by creating a safe, welcoming space for South Asian women to enjoy fitness while improving their health outcomes.”

The British Medical Journal Research

The 2015 study involved an 8-week intervention where South Asian women attended

Bollywood dance classes twice a week. The results included:

  • A significant reduction in blood sugar levels (HbA1c), a key marker of diabetes control.

  • Weight loss among participants who attended at least 10 of the 16 sessions.

  • Increased engagement thanks to the cultural familiarity of Bollywood dance.

This evidence underpins Bollyfit Active’s mission to provide a sustainable, enjoyable,

and a health-focused solution for South Asian women.

Addressing a Critical Health Challenge

South Asians are up to six times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than other

populations, according to the NHS. Yet, many fitness programmes fail to engage this

community effectively. Bollyfit Active offers a culturally relevant solution, breaking

barriers to fitness and making health improvements accessible to all.

Join the culturally relevant exercise movement

Bollyfit Active invites women to join its classes and experience the joy and benefits of

Bollywood dance. With a vision to reduce health disparities and create inclusive fitness

opportunities, the programme is set to transform lives – one dance at a time.
